On August 15, the Trump administration seized operational control of Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), deploying National Guard troops and installing a federal official as 'emergency' police commissioner. This unprecedented move overrides the authority of DC's elected officials and undermines decades of progress under the Home Rule Act, which grants DC residents the right to elect their own local government.
Federal law does not authorize this usurpation of local power. The administration's actions are not only illegal but also threaten the safety and autonomy of DC's 700,000 residents. Crime in DC is at its lowest level in 30 years, according to police data, directly contradicting claims used to justify this takeover.
