Demand Strong US Action for a Binding Global Plastics Treaty

Related Article: Tough US stance casts gloom over plastics pollution deal after Geneva flop - bdnews24.com - Friday, August 15, 2025, 12:57:42 PM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: US Department of State, President of the United States, and US Congressional Environmental Committees

Goal: Push the US government to support and negotiate for a robust, binding global treaty that includes caps on new plastic production and strong measures to reduce plastic pollution.

The recent collapse of the UN plastics pollution talks in Geneva is a devastating setback for our oceans, climate, and communities. The United States, as the world’s second-largest plastics producer, played a key role in blocking ambitious measures to cap plastic production. We must urge US leaders to reverse course and support a strong, legally-binding treaty to curb plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is choking our oceans, poisoning communities, and fueling the climate crisis. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence and support from over 100 countries, the United States government blocked progress at the latest round of UN negotiations for a global plastics treaty. This obstruction not only undermines international cooperation but also puts the health of people and the planet at risk.

Every month of delay adds nearly a million tons of plastic waste to our environment, much of it ending up in vulnerable island nations and coastal communities. The US must stop siding with oil and plastics lobbyists and instead champion real solutions: capping plastic production, supporting a just transition for affected workers, and holding polluters accountable.

We call on US leaders to end their opposition to meaningful action and work with the global community to deliver a treaty that protects our health, our environment, and future generations.
