Target: Slovak Parliament, Prime Minister Robert Fico, and coalition party leaders
Goal: We urge the Slovak Parliament and government leaders to reject any plan to reduce the number of self-governing regions and to prioritize strengthening local governance and community participation.
Recent statements from the Prime Minister and coalition parties indicate growing support for a proposal to reduce the number of Slovakia's self-governing regions. This change would paralyze the functioning of local governments, lower the quality of life for ordinary people, and centralize power away from communities.
Local governments play a vital role in delivering public services, supporting democratic participation, and ensuring that diverse regional needs are met. Weakening these structures risks creating inefficiency, confusion, and a loss of accountability.
We call on all members of the Slovak Parliament and government leaders to stand with citizens and defend local democracy. Instead of reducing the number of regions, the government should focus on empowering local authorities, increasing transparency, and investing in public services that benefit everyone.
