Goal: Restore and protect local control over the Metropolitan Police Department by reversing the federal takeover and upholding the authority of Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Pamela Smith.
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned by the federal government's recent actions to override Washington, D.C.'s local authority by appointing the DEA head as the city's police commissioner. This move, initiated by the Trump administration, disregards the D.C. Home Rule Act and the will of the city's residents. Local control is essential for accountability, transparency, and effective public safety. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) must remain under the leadership of officials chosen by the people of D.C., not imposed by federal authorities. We call for the immediate reversal of this federal intervention to ensure that the MPD remains accountable to the community it serves.
