We, the undersigned, stand with the people of Washington DC and their elected officials in opposing the Trump administration's unlawful takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The recent directive from federal officials, which places the MPD under the control of a federal appointee, undermines the District's home rule and threatens the rights and safety of its 700,000 residents.
This action not only violates the legal authority of DC's mayor and police chief but also sets a dangerous precedent for federal interference in local governance. The escalation of federal law enforcement and National Guard presence throughout the city has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, rather than safety and security.
We call on all relevant authorities to immediately halt this federal takeover, respect the autonomy of DC, and ensure that local policing remains accountable to the community it serves. The people of DC deserve dignity, self-determination, and protection from unlawful federal overreach.
Key Demands
- Immediately rescind the federal directive placing the MPD under the control of Commissioner Terry Cole.
