Target: President of the United States, Congress, State Governors, and City Officials
Goal: We call on local, state, and federal officials to halt forced evictions of homeless encampments and instead invest in proven, humane solutions: affordable housing, mental health care, and supportive services.
Homelessness is a complex social issue rooted in a lack of affordable housing, inadequate mental health and addiction services, and decades of underinvestment in social safety nets. Recent actions to forcibly remove homeless encampments—without providing real alternatives—are not only cruel, but also ineffective. These sweeps displace vulnerable people, destroy their belongings, and push them further from needed services, while doing nothing to solve the underlying crisis.
Criminalizing homelessness and pushing people out of sight does not make our communities safer or healthier. Instead, it perpetuates cycles of trauma, instability, and poverty. Evidence shows that Housing First policies—providing permanent, stable housing along with voluntary support services—are the most effective way to reduce homelessness and improve public health and safety.
We urge our leaders to reject policies of forced eviction and criminalization, and instead commit to real, compassionate solutions that respect the dignity and rights of all people. Our communities are stronger when everyone has a safe place to call home.
