Defend D.C. Home Rule and Sanctuary Policies: Reject Federal Overreach

Related Article: D.C. Mayor, AG Reject Bondi's Police Commissioner Order - 997wpro.com - Friday, August 15, 2025, 9:58:23 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: U.S. Congress, U.S. Department of Justice, President of the United States

Goal: We call on Congress, the Department of Justice, and the White House to respect D.C.'s Home Rule, restore full authority to local officials, and protect D.C.'s sanctuary city policies from federal interference.

Washington, D.C.'s right to self-governance and its sanctuary city protections are under attack. Recent actions by federal officials threaten the autonomy of D.C.'s elected leaders and undermine longstanding commitments to immigrant communities.

On Thursday, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a directive attempting to install a federal 'emergency police commissioner' in Washington, D.C., overriding the authority of the locally elected mayor and police chief. This unprecedented move not only violates the Home Rule Act, which grants D.C. limited self-government, but also threatens the city's sanctuary city policies that protect immigrant residents from unjust targeting and deportation.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Attorney General Brian Schwalb have both rejected Bondi's order as unlawful, affirming that the law requires D.C. police to cooperate with federal authorities only for federal purposes during a declared emergency—not to surrender local control or abandon protections for vulnerable communities. The attempt to rescind policies that restrict local police from aiding in immigration enforcement puts thousands of D.C. residents at risk and undermines trust between law enforcement and the community.

We demand that federal officials respect D.C.'s autonomy, immediately reverse these overreaching directives, and uphold the sanctuary city policies that keep our communities safe and united.
