Target: U.S. Department of Education, National Science Foundation, and federal policymakers
Goal: We call on federal agencies and the Department of Education to immediately cease the use of funding suspensions as leverage against universities, ensure due process in all investigations, and restore all paused or terminated grants to affected institution
The Trump administration's unprecedented move to withhold over $550 million in federal research grants from UCLA, citing alleged civil rights violations, sets a dangerous precedent for academic freedom and the future of higher education. While a federal judge has ordered the restoration of some funds, the broader issue remains: universities across the country are at risk of losing critical research support based on opaque, politicized decisions.
Other universities, such as Columbia, Brown, and Harvard, have faced similar threats, with some forced to negotiate costly settlements and policy changes under duress. This approach undermines the independence of academic institutions and jeopardizes vital scientific research that benefits society as a whole.
We urge federal agencies to respect due process, end the use of grant suspensions as a bargaining tool, and fully restore all suspended or terminated funding. Our universities must be able to pursue knowledge and innovation free from political interference.
