We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the federal government’s unilateral move to seize control of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C. The appointment of Terry Cole, a career DEA official with a record of aggressive drug enforcement, as 'emergency police commissioner' strips D.C. residents of their right to self-governance and undermines the authority of local leaders.
This takeover comes on the heels of directives targeting the city’s sanctuary policies, which protect immigrant communities from unjust targeting and deportation. The rescinding of policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement threatens the safety and trust of D.C.’s diverse communities.
We stand with D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb and demand the immediate restoration of local control over the MPD. D.C. residents deserve to have their voices heard and their rights respected—free from federal overreach and anti-immigrant directives.
