On Friday, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its unauthorized seizure of control over the D.C. police force and the deployment of federal troops in the city. The administration’s actions, which exceed the authority granted by Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, undermine the District’s right to govern its own affairs and set a dangerous precedent for federal interference in local governance.
The attempt to sideline Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith through Attorney General Pam Bondi’s new order further erodes the District’s autonomy. These actions are not only unlawful but also threaten the safety, rights, and democratic representation of D.C. residents. We demand an immediate end to this federal overreach and the restoration of local control to D.C. officials.
