Defend DC Autonomy: Stop the Illegal Federal Takeover of Washington’s Police

Goal: Protect the District of Columbia’s right to self-governance and prevent any unlawful federal takeover of its police force.

The Trump administration’s attempt to seize control of Washington DC’s Metropolitan Police Department is an illegal and undemocratic attack on the rights of DC residents. We must stand together to defend local autonomy and resist federal overreach.

Washington DC’s right to self-governance is under threat. The Trump administration has attempted to override the will of DC’s elected leaders by seizing control of the Metropolitan Police Department and deploying hundreds of National Guard troops, citing a so-called 'crime emergency' despite declining crime rates.

This action violates the 1973 Home Rule Act, which empowers DC residents to elect their own leaders and manage local affairs. The administration’s move to appoint a federal 'emergency police commissioner' strips local officials of their authority and undermines the democratic rights of the city’s 700,000 residents.

DC’s Attorney General has filed suit to stop these unprecedented and unlawful actions. We call on Congress, the Department of Justice, and the President to respect DC’s autonomy, uphold the Home Rule Act, and immediately end any attempts to federalize the city’s police force.
