Target: President of the United States, U.S. Congress, Office of Management and Budget
Goal: We call on federal policymakers to reverse proposed cuts to science funding, restore robust support for basic research, and ensure that the United States continues to lead in scientific discovery and innovation.
For over 80 years, American science has thrived thanks to public investment in curiosity-driven research. From the National Science Foundation to NASA, these investments have led to breakthroughs that benefit all of society, from GPS technology to wildfire prediction and beyond. Yet, current budget proposals threaten to slash funding for basic research by 34%, reduce NASA's budget to historic lows, and cut support for graduate students and early-career scientists.
These cuts would not only stifle innovation and economic growth, but also undermine our ability to address urgent challenges like climate change, public health, and disaster preparedness. Science is not a luxury—it is a public good that requires sustained, collective investment. We urge our leaders to recognize the true value of scientific inquiry and to protect the future of American research by restoring and expanding federal support for science.
