Target: President Joe Biden, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and the United States Congress
Goal: We call on the U.S. government to extend and expand legal protections for Ukrainian refugees and prevent their deportation.
Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the United States has welcomed approximately 250,000 Ukrainians fleeing violence and instability. Many of these refugees arrived under the Uniting for Ukraine program, which provided a temporary two-year humanitarian parole status, contingent on private sponsorship. Now, as their permits begin to expire, around 120,000 Ukrainians—those who arrived after August 16, 2023—are at risk of losing all legal protection.
If no action is taken, these individuals will be rendered undocumented, subject to arrest, detention, and deportation, despite having sought refuge from war. This is a humanitarian crisis in the making. The U.S. must honor its commitment to protect those fleeing conflict and uphold its values of compassion and justice.
We urge the administration and Congress to act immediately to extend and expand legal protections for Ukrainian refugees, ensuring their safety and dignity while they remain in the United States.
