Target: U.S. Congress, House Oversight Committee, Senate Homeland Security Committee, Mayor Muriel Bowser, and the White House
Goal: Stop the federalization of D.C. policing, end the forced removal of unhoused people, and protect the civil and human rights of all residents.
We are alarmed by the White House’s unprecedented move to seize control of D.C.’s police department and deploy federal law enforcement and National Guard troops across the city. This action has resulted in dozens of arrests, including of immigrants and unhoused people, and the forced clearance of encampments—often with little transparency or provision for adequate shelter and services.
Local officials, civil rights organizations, and advocates for the unhoused have voiced profound concerns about the erosion of local democracy and the violation of basic rights. The federal operation, which includes detaining people without arrest powers and relocating unhoused residents far from the city, risks criminalizing poverty and immigration status while failing to address root causes of crime and homelessness.
We demand an immediate end to these militarized tactics, meaningful oversight by Congress, and a recommitment to humane, community-based solutions. The people of D.C.—and all Americans—deserve safety, dignity, and respect for their constitutional rights.
