Protect Indian Farmers and Workers: Demand Fair Trade, Social Protections, and Equitable Tax Reform

Target: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India
Goal: We call on the Government of India to implement equitable economic reforms, safeguard farmers and workers from the impacts of international trade disputes, and ensure that tax relief reaches those who need it most.
Recent trade tensions between India and the United States, including steep tariffs on Indian exports, threaten the livelihoods of millions of Indian workers and farmers. While the government has announced tax cuts and a push for self-reliance, these measures alone will not ensure economic justice or protect vulnerable communities. We must demand comprehensive reforms that prioritize people over profits.
India’s recent trade conflict with the United States has led to the imposition of harsh tariffs on Indian exports, threatening key sectors such as agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing. While the government’s response includes lowering the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and promoting self-reliance, these steps do not go far enough to protect the most vulnerable.
Farmers, workers, and small businesses face mounting uncertainty. Past attempts at agricultural reform have sparked mass protests, highlighting the need for policies that genuinely reflect the needs of rural and working-class communities. Tax reforms must prioritize essential goods, women, students, and farmers, not just large corporations or urban elites.
We urge the government to pursue a people-centered economic strategy that:
- Ensures fair compensation and social protections for all workers and farmers affected by global trade policies.
- Implements progressive tax reforms that reduce the burden on the poor and working class, while ensuring corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share.
- Strengthens public investment in rural infrastructure, education, and healthcare to build true self-reliance.
- Protects democratic rights to organize, protest, and participate in policy-making, especially for marginalized communities.
India’s future depends on inclusive, just, and sustainable economic policies. Stand with us to demand real change.
Key Demands
- Guarantee social protections and fair compensation for farmers and workers impacted by trade disputes and tariff hikes.
- Implement progressive GST reforms that lower rates on essential goods, women’s products, student supplies, and agricultural inputs.
- Ensure large corporations and the wealthy pay a fair share of taxes to fund public services and social welfare.
- Increase public investment in rural infrastructure, healthcare, and education to promote genuine self-reliance.
- Protect the rights of workers, farmers, and marginalized communities to organize, protest, and participate in economic policymaking.
