Prioritize Peace and Nuclear Arms Control at the Alaska Summit

The upcoming summit in Alaska between Presidents Trump and Putin is a critical opportunity to de-escalate the war in Ukraine and restore vital arms control agreements. The ongoing conflict has caused immense suffering and threatens to spiral into a broader, more dangerous confrontation. Meanwhile, the systematic dismantling of nuclear arms treaties—such as the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, the INF Treaty, and the Open Skies Treaty—has left the world more vulnerable to the unthinkable: the use of nuclear weapons.

We believe that the immediate priority must be to halt the bloodshed in Ukraine through a negotiated ceasefire, even if it requires difficult compromises. At the same time, both nations must commit to renewing the New START Treaty before its expiration in 2026, capping the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads and preventing a new arms race.

Diplomacy, not sanctions and saber-rattling, is the only path to a safer world. We urge both leaders to take bold action for peace and security—not just for their own nations, but for all of humanity.
