Target: U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. Congress, UNFPA, and international donor agencies
Goal: We urge the U.S. government and international donors to immediately restore and increase funding for maternal health programs in Malawi, ensuring access to life-saving care for women affected by obstetric fistula and other reproductive health conditions.
Malawi, one of the world's poorest countries, has made significant strides in improving maternal health, thanks in large part to international support. The Bwaila Fistula Care Centre in Lilongwe, supported by UNFPA and the Freedom from Fistula Foundation, is the only specialized clinic in the country providing surgery, rehabilitation, and community reintegration for women suffering from obstetric fistula—a devastating childbirth injury that causes incontinence and social isolation.
Recent global aid cuts, including the U.S. government's decision to slash USAID funding, have put these essential services at risk. Women are already losing access to surgery, skilled birth attendants, and emergency care. NGOs have been forced to scale back or close programs, leaving vulnerable women without treatment or support. The consequences are dire: increased maternal mortality, deepening poverty, and the loss of dignity for thousands of women and girls.
Restoring and increasing aid is not just a matter of funding—it's a matter of justice, health, and human rights. We call on USAID, Congress, and all international donors to act now to prevent the reversal of hard-won progress in Malawi. Every woman deserves access to safe childbirth, medical care, and the opportunity to rebuild her life.
