Target: State Legislatures and Congressional Leaders
Goal: We call for a transparent, nonpartisan, and equitable redistricting process that protects the voting rights of all communities and ensures fair representation.
The current redistricting process in many states, including Texas, has been manipulated for partisan advantage, undermining the core principles of democracy. When politicians draw district lines to favor their own party, it dilutes the power of voters, especially those from marginalized and nonwhite communities. This practice, known as gerrymandering, leads to uncompetitive elections and unrepresentative government.
We believe that redistricting should reflect the diversity of our communities, allow nonwhite voters a fair chance to elect representatives of their choice, and maximize the number of competitive seats. While balancing these goals can be challenging, it is essential for a healthy democracy. We urge lawmakers to adopt reforms that prioritize fairness, transparency, and public input in the map-drawing process.
