Target: President of the United States, U.S. Congress, and local city governments
Goal: We call on federal and local leaders to halt the militarization of our cities, invest in community-driven public safety, and uphold democratic values.
The deployment of National Guard, FBI, and DEA agents to patrol American cities—most recently Washington, D.C.—represents a dangerous escalation that puts our civil liberties at risk. Crime rates in D.C. have decreased, yet federal troops have been sent in, ignoring fact-based data and instead relying on sensationalized media narratives. This approach echoes troubling moments in our nation’s history, such as the tragedy at Kent State University, and sets a precedent for the normalization of military assets on our streets.
Rather than investing in militarized responses, our cities need resources directed to proven public safety strategies, such as violence prevention programs, mental health services, and community engagement. We must resist efforts to stoke fear and division, and instead work toward healing our political and social divides. Our shared commitment to democracy, respect, and empathy can guide us toward a safer, more united future.
We urge our elected officials to reject further militarization, prioritize community-based solutions, and protect the rights and dignity of all residents.
