Support Stronger Social Protections and Workers’ Rights Amid Economic Slowdown in China

Related Article: China's economy slows sharply as trade war bites - thehindubusinessline.com - Friday, August 15, 2025, 5:45:57 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: National People’s Congress of China and State Council of the People’s Republic of China

Goal: Urge the Chinese government to expand social protections, invest in job creation, and strengthen workers’ rights to ensure economic resilience and social justice during this period of uncertainty.

China’s recent economic slowdown, exacerbated by global trade tensions and climate disruptions, is impacting workers, families, and vulnerable communities the hardest. As growth falters and unemployment rises, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being of ordinary people over corporate interests.

China’s economy is facing significant challenges, with factory output, retail sales, and investment all slowing sharply in recent months. The trade war with the United States and extreme weather events have further destabilized livelihoods, while unemployment has risen and borrowing has contracted. These pressures threaten to deepen inequality and undermine the social fabric.

While the government has announced some measures to subsidize consumer loans and reduce education costs, much more is needed to protect workers, families, and marginalized groups from the fallout. Instead of focusing solely on corporate profitability and market stability, we call for a robust expansion of social safety nets, public investment in sustainable job creation, and the strengthening of labor rights and protections.

We urge policymakers to put people first by enacting bold policies that ensure economic security, dignity, and opportunity for all, regardless of global economic headwinds.
