Protect Our Communities: Stop the Dismantling and Privatization of FEMA

Target: President of the United States, Congress, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)

Goal: We demand the immediate reversal of staff cuts to FEMA, a halt to any plans to close or privatize FEMA, and the restoration of robust, federally funded emergency preparedness and response for all communities.

Recent actions by federal officials threaten to leave small towns like Villa Park, Illinois, and communities across the nation defenseless in the face of disasters. The planned closure of FEMA and the push to privatize emergency response will put countless lives at risk, especially in towns without the resources of wealthy counties.

In the wake of catastrophic floods in Texas and the haunting memories of Hurricane Katrina, it is clear that federal emergency management saves lives. The recent firing of key FEMA staff and plans to close the agency by December will leave local officials and small towns like Villa Park, Illinois, without the resources or expertise to handle disasters.

History has shown that privatizing emergency evacuation leads to tragedy. When evacuation planning was handed to private contractors in New Orleans, over a thousand people drowned, many of them left behind because they had no means to escape. The same story is repeating itself: critical positions remain unfilled, evacuation plans are hidden or nonexistent, and contracts are being handed to politically connected corporations with no accountability.

We cannot allow profit motives to replace public safety. Emergency response must be a public good, funded and managed by the federal government, accessible to all—regardless of wealth, race, or geography. We call on our leaders to restore FEMA's capacity, ensure transparency in emergency planning, and guarantee that every community has the protection it deserves.
