Target: President of the United States, US Trade Representative, and Members of Congress
Goal: We call for the immediate removal of unjust tariffs on Indian goods, and demand that the US government pursue diplomacy and multilateral cooperation—rather than economic punishment—to resolve international conflicts and promote peace.
The recent decision by the US administration to raise tariffs on Indian goods to 50%—the highest rate imposed on any major trading partner—has been justified as a means to pressure India over its purchase of Russian oil. However, such actions undermine the principles of fair trade, damage the livelihoods of workers and small businesses in both countries, and risk escalating economic and geopolitical tensions.
India has rightly called these tariffs 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' vowing to protect its national interests. The use of secondary tariffs as a tool to influence foreign policy not only punishes the people of India but also sets a precedent for economic coercion that can be wielded against any nation. This approach does not foster genuine dialogue or lasting peace. Instead, it undermines trust and cooperation between nations, and risks deepening divides at a time when global solidarity is needed most.
We urge the US government to end these punitive tariffs, engage in good-faith diplomacy, and work with international partners to resolve conflicts through peaceful, cooperative means. True leadership is demonstrated through respect for sovereignty, fair economic practices, and a commitment to global justice.
