Target: President of the United States, DC Mayor, DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Goal: We call on federal and local authorities to immediately halt the forced removal of homeless encampments in DC and to prioritize humane, community-driven solutions to homelessness.
On Thursday night, federal agents from multiple agencies gathered in Washington, DC to enforce President Trump's directive to clear homeless encampments. Notices were posted on tents, giving residents only a few days to vacate. This aggressive approach has created confusion, fear, and instability among the city’s most vulnerable residents.
Advocates and legal representatives intervened to prevent immediate removals, but the threat remains. The federal government has not coordinated with local outreach groups or provided a clear plan for humane alternatives. Sweeps like these disrupt support systems, jeopardize housing opportunities, and further marginalize people already facing immense hardship.
Homelessness is not a crime. Forced removals do not address the root causes of poverty or provide real solutions. We demand an end to these crackdowns and the implementation of compassionate, evidence-based policies that uplift, not punish, unhoused people.
