Target: Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. City Council, U.S. Congress, and the White House

Recent reports highlight a surge in violent crime in Washington, D.C., with alarming increases in homicides, carjackings, and other offenses. While some have called for more policing and even the deployment of the National Guard, these measures fail to address the underlying issues driving crime in our communities. Residents are frustrated not only by the violence, but also by the lack of transparency in crime statistics and the absence of meaningful, long-term solutions.
We know that real safety comes from strong communities, quality education, access to good jobs, and robust social services. Over-reliance on punitive measures and criminalization—especially of youth—perpetuates cycles of harm and does not make us safer. Instead, we demand investments in proven strategies: violence interruption programs, restorative justice, affordable housing, mental health care, and fully funded public schools.
We also demand accountability and transparency from law enforcement and public officials. Manipulating crime data erodes public trust and prevents honest conversations about what our communities need. We stand with D.C. residents calling for real action, not more militarization, to make neighborhoods safe for everyone.
