Target: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India
Goal: Urge Prime Minister Modi and the Government of India to stand firm against US pressure to open Indian agricultural markets to corporate interests, protect Indian farmers, and uphold food sovereignty in all trade agreements.
Prime Minister Modi has publicly vowed to protect Indian farmers, fishers, and cattle rearers from harmful policies. However, ongoing trade negotiations with the United States threaten to undermine these promises by allowing increased imports of US agricultural products, including soybeans, canola oil, apples, almonds, pistachios, chicken, and dairy. These imports could devastate local producers, lower prices for Indian farmers, and increase dependence on foreign corporations.
We are especially concerned about the potential entry of genetically modified (GM) foods and the pressure to open India's dairy and poultry sectors, which would harm small-scale farmers and threaten food safety. The principle of 'swadeshi'—self-reliance and support for indigenous production—must guide all trade policy decisions.
We call on the Government of India to prioritize the interests of Indian farmers and rural communities over corporate profits and to ensure that any trade agreements respect India's food sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and the right to safe, healthy food.
