Target: U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Congress
Goal: Urge the U.S. Department of Education and Congress to safeguard and expand DEI programs in educational institutions, ensuring that all students have access to equitable opportunities and inclusive learning environments.
In February, the Department of Education under the previous administration issued memos threatening to cut federal funding from schools and universities that continued to implement DEI programs. These actions aimed to end practices designed to address longstanding racial disparities in education, under the pretense of preventing so-called 'race-based decision-making.' The guidance dramatically expanded the interpretation of a Supreme Court decision, seeking to ban any consideration of race in admissions, hiring, financial aid, and other aspects of academic life.
These measures caused confusion and fear among educators, who were forced to choose between supporting inclusive educational practices or risking severe penalties. The memos were widely condemned as illegal censorship and an attack on academic freedom and civil rights.
Thanks to a lawsuit led by the American Federation of Teachers and the American Sociological Association, a federal judge has now ruled that the Department of Education violated the law with these actions. However, the fight is not over. We must ensure that DEI programs are not only protected from future attacks but actively supported and expanded to create fair and inclusive schools for all.
