Target: U.S. Department of Education, Secretary of Education, Congressional Education Committees
Goal: We call on the Department of Education and federal policymakers to respect the court’s ruling, restore support for DEI programs, and ensure that educational institutions can continue their vital work to promote equity and inclusion for all students.
The Trump administration’s attempt to eliminate DEI programs in schools and universities was a direct attack on efforts to address longstanding racial and social disparities in education. By threatening to cut federal funding and prosecuting institutions that continued DEI initiatives, these policies created fear and confusion among educators, undermining their ability to foster inclusive learning environments.
Judge Stephanie Gallagher’s ruling found that the Department of Education violated the law by issuing guidance that bypassed proper procedures and threatened educators for engaging in lawful, beneficial practices. These actions not only disregarded the needs of marginalized students but also sought to silence educators and restrict constitutionally protected speech.
DEI programs are essential for creating equitable opportunities and addressing systemic barriers that have historically excluded students of color and other marginalized groups. We urge the Department of Education to comply with the court’s ruling, rescind all anti-DEI guidance, and affirm its commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all educational settings.
