Target: Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Legislature, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
Goal: Urge Governor Greg Abbott and Texas state leaders to expand workforce certification programs to include broad, transferrable skills that empower workers to adapt and thrive across industries.
We applaud the recent $3.8 million in state grants to Dallas College for workforce certification. However, we urge Governor Greg Abbott and all Texas leaders to further expand these investments to ensure that all Texans have access to education and certification in transferrable, cross-sector skills.
While specialized certifications create pathways to good jobs, they can also lock workers into specific industries vulnerable to economic shifts. As we have seen in construction, energy, and other sectors, workforce demands can change swiftly and dramatically. Texans deserve the freedom and security that comes with essential skills that transfer across roles and industries.
Whether offered as stand-alone opportunities or integrated into secondary, post-secondary, and continuing education, cross-sector skills training will make our workforce more resilient and adaptable. This is an investment in the long-term strength of Texas and in the dignity and mobility of every worker.
