In light of escalating US tariffs on both Indian and Chinese goods, it is imperative that India rethinks its economic strategy. Former Niti Aayog chief Amitabh Kant has suggested that India should move away from large-scale imports in favor of joint ventures between Indian and Chinese companies, with Chinese partners holding only minority stakes. Such an approach would not only boost the 'Make in India' and 'Manufacture in India' initiatives, but also create jobs, increase technology transfer, and build economic resilience.
However, it is crucial that these joint ventures adhere to strict labor and environmental standards, prioritize fair wages, and prevent any erosion of workers’ rights or local ownership. By setting clear regulations and ensuring transparency, India can harness the benefits of regional cooperation while safeguarding national interests and social justice.
