Goal: We urge the Government of India to prioritize joint ventures with Chinese firms that respect Indian labor, environmental, and ownership regulations, thereby strengthening the domestic economy and protecting workers’ rights.

Recent US tariffs have adversely affected both India and China, highlighting the need for regional cooperation and economic self-reliance. Instead of relying on imports, India can foster sustainable growth by encouraging joint ventures with Chinese companies, supporting local manufacturing, and ensuring fair labor standards.

In light of escalating US tariffs on both Indian and Chinese goods, it is imperative that India rethinks its economic strategy. Former Niti Aayog chief Amitabh Kant has suggested that India should move away from large-scale imports in favor of joint ventures between Indian and Chinese companies, with Chinese partners holding only minority stakes. Such an approach would not only boost the 'Make in India' and 'Manufacture in India' initiatives, but also create jobs, increase technology transfer, and build economic resilience.

However, it is crucial that these joint ventures adhere to strict labor and environmental standards, prioritize fair wages, and prevent any erosion of workers’ rights or local ownership. By setting clear regulations and ensuring transparency, India can harness the benefits of regional cooperation while safeguarding national interests and social justice.

We call on the Government of India to enact policies that:

Mandate that all joint ventures adhere to Indian labor laws, provide living wages, and guarantee safe working conditions.
Require environmental impact assessments and strict adherence to environmental regulations for all new manufacturing ventures.
Ensure transparency and public oversight in the approval and operation of joint ventures, with regular reporting on labor and environmental compliance.
Protect local ownership and prevent monopolistic practices by setting caps on foreign corporate influence in key sectors.
Develop mechanisms for technology transfer and skill development to benefit Indian workers and communities.
