Target: US President and United States Trade Representative
Goal: We call on the US government to immediately revoke the punitive tariffs on Indian imports and respect India's right to make independent economic decisions.
The US government has announced a 25% tariff hike on imports from India, raising the total tariff to 50%, as a penalty for India's continued purchase of oil from Russia. This move threatens to harm $40 billion worth of Indian exports and puts thousands of workers and small businesses at risk on both sides of the Pacific. The US administration claims these measures are necessary to pressure India to stop buying Russian oil, but such unilateral economic sanctions set a dangerous precedent and undermine the principles of fair trade and national sovereignty.
India has made clear that its oil purchases are based on economic considerations and that it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests. The targeting of India, a major democracy and strategic partner, is unjustified and unreasonable. Instead of resorting to economic blackmail, the US should engage in respectful dialogue and uphold the values of international cooperation.
We urge the US government to immediately revoke these punitive tariffs, respect India's economic sovereignty, and work towards a fair and just global trade system that does not weaponize economic policy for political ends.
