Target: President of the United States, U.S. Congress, and Department of Justice
Goal: Restore local control over D.C. policing and demand federal investment in community-based violence prevention, mental health care, and economic opportunity.
Washington, D.C. residents deserve safety and democracy. The recent decision to federalize the D.C. police force and deploy National Guard troops is an alarming overreach that threatens both. While violent crime is a serious issue, top-down militarization and federal control do not address the underlying causes of violence—poverty, inequality, lack of mental health services, and underfunded community resources.
Federal intervention strips D.C. residents of their right to self-governance, overriding the authority of local leaders and the will of the people. Instead of imposing outside control, we urge our leaders to invest in proven, community-based solutions: affordable housing, youth programs, restorative justice, trauma-informed mental health care, and living-wage jobs.
We demand an immediate end to the federal takeover of D.C. policing and a commitment to policies that build real safety and justice for all D.C. residents.
