Demand Immediate Release and Fair Treatment for Jimmy Lai and Press Freedom Defenders in Hong Kong

Target: Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Chief Executive John Lee, Secretary for Justice Paul Lam, and the People's Republic of China Government

Goal: We call for the immediate release of Jimmy Lai and all other former Apple Daily executives, an end to politically motivated prosecutions, and the restoration of press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong.

The ongoing trial and detention of Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, is a grave threat to press freedom and human rights in Hong Kong. Lai, 77, has been held in solitary confinement for over 1,680 days and now faces life imprisonment under the national security law. His deteriorating health and the prolonged nature of his trial highlight urgent concerns about judicial independence and humane treatment.

Jimmy Lai, a prominent Hong Kong publisher and pro-democracy activist, is facing life imprisonment on charges of 'colluding with foreign forces' and 'seditious publications' under the Beijing-imposed national security law. His trial, which has dragged on for over 140 days, far exceeds the original estimate and has been marred by repeated delays, including those caused by his worsening health. Lai has reportedly been denied adequate medical care, raising serious concerns about his safety and well-being.

His case is emblematic of the broader crackdown on press freedom and civil liberties in Hong Kong. The international community and human rights organizations have condemned his detention and called for his immediate release. Yet, the Hong Kong government continues to dismiss these concerns, labeling them as 'slanderous remarks' by external forces.
