Support Fair Wages and Consumer Protections Amid Economic Growth in Japan

Related Article: Japan's economy grows at 1% pace in the last quarter despite Trump's higher tariffs - economictimes.indiatimes.com - Friday, August 15, 2025, 12:22:16 AM Eastern Daylight Time

Target: Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Cabinet Office of Japan, and the Bank of Japan

Goal: We urge the Japanese government and policymakers to implement strong measures that ensure rising prosperity is shared by all, including action on wages, consumer protections, and social safety nets.

Despite recent economic growth driven by exports and tourism, many people in Japan continue to face stagnant wages and rising prices. It is crucial that this growth benefits everyone, not just corporations and the wealthy.

Japan's economy has grown for five consecutive quarters, surpassing expectations with a 1% annual growth rate in the last quarter. This growth has been fueled by exports and a surge in tourism, even as the US imposed higher tariffs on Japanese goods. However, this headline growth masks ongoing struggles for ordinary people: consumer spending remains weak, prices continue to rise, and wages have stagnated for years.

The benefits of economic expansion must not be limited to corporations and investors. As the government considers raising interest rates and faces political uncertainty, it is more important than ever to prioritize the needs of working people and vulnerable communities. We call on policymakers to take immediate action to increase wages, strengthen consumer protections, and expand social programs to ensure that all residents of Japan can thrive in this period of change.
